High-Speed Diesel Engines Go Green

08 November 2007

German high-speed diesel engine manufacturer Tognum's subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen is developing a green heavy-duty train engine.

The engine is designed to meet strict European Union (EU) rules for exhaust emissions, which imposes limits on nitrogen oxide levels inside engines, due to come into force in 2012.

Tognum says the engines are able to adjust the combustion process in the cylinders "to meet any load while operating with extremely low emissions".

Half the funds for this project, due for completion in February 2008, will be provided by the EU to secure the technological leadership of European manufacturers of combustion engines in the next decade.
