31 October 2007

The UK Government is considering new ways to speed up rail links between the country's biggest cities as part of a nationwide transport consultation.

The Department of Transport (DfT) says it has £20bn still to allocate in the five years from 2014 to 2019, a proportion of which will go to expanding high-speed rail, which would also assist the government meet its carbon reduction targets.

The first stage of the consultation suggests that “forcing the pace of technological improvements” and changing current practises will be the “key” to ensuring a 60% reduction in CO2 by 2050.

UK Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly has also urged big business and transport organisations to take part in the consultation and back plans to reduce congestion and promote greener travel.

Yesterday, the DfT announced a £132m funding package for freight rail in a bid to significantly cut nationwide road and traffic congestion.
