French Rail Strike Extended

18 October 2007

Today's one-day strike called by French rail workers will continue into tomorrow, further crippling the transport system and disrupting high-speed Eurostar services.

Eurostar - which connects Paris to London and other European cities - has cancelled six services today warning that other services may be subject to delay or possible short notice cancellation.

The UNSA union confirmed a vote to extend the strike in the French capital by a day, which could affect about 40,000 English rugby fans commuting to Paris for the Rugby World Cup at the weekend.

French rail company SNCF's trade unions called for strikes last week in response to planned government reforms of pensions and employment schemes.
