Canadian Rail Gets C$700m Boost

12 October 2007

Ottowa's Federal Government is to give almost C$700m to boost funding for Canada's Via Rail, over the next five years.

Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon announced the C$691.9m initiative to help Via Rail refurbish passenger train services at Union Station in downtown Toronto, according to Canadian news site ctv.ca.

Via Rail serves 4.1 million passengers over 14,000km of track each year, providing services for 450 Canadian cities.

The money will be invested to reduce emissions by improving fuel efficiency which will cut travel times, Cannon says.
