The UK Government has announced new plans to increase rail capacity across the north of England, enabling faster trains to operate across the region.
The Department of Transport says the plans will allow more trains to operate across northern England, particularly key services between the cities of Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle.
The increased capacity will also potentially allow improved links to Manchester Airport and more freight connections with ports across the north.
Network Rail will be looking over proposals by UK agency Northern Way who has come up with the proposals.
The UK Railway White Paper, which came out earlier this year, also set out plans for faster journey times on the Liverpool-Manchester-Leeds TransPennine route, pledging to improve reliability so that 92% of trains run on time.
