Iran Strikes New Train Deal

28 August 2007

The Islamic Republic of Iran Railways, Iran Power Plant Projects Management Company (MAPNA) and Germany's Siemens Transportation have finalised a contract to manufacture 200 locomotives for cargo and passenger trains, according to Iranian news reports.

Under the contract, MAPNA will manufacture the locomotives in cooperation with Siemens in a deal which was finally agreed after five years of intensive negotiations with Iranian Railways.

Iranian Railways is believed to currently own 420 locomotives and hopes the new trains will join the fleet in two years.
