US Company to Upgrade Hong Kong Rail Radio

22 August 2007

US-based communications systems company Andrew Corporation has won a contract to upgrade Hong Kong's rail radio network.

Andrew will modify Mass Transit Railway Corporation's (MTRC) communications infrastructure in stations, tunnels and other buildings.

The system is expected to enable migration of the railway's radio system from a conventional 80MHz trunk radio system to an 800MHz TETRA (terrestrial trunked radio) system.

TETRA is a mobile radio standard often employed by public safety and emergency organizations. The MTRC's existing 80MHz radio system was built in the early 1990s.
