Indian Metro Boosts Capacity

24 July 2007

India's Delhi Metro Network is boosting its capacity by adding 340 metro cars in a bid to alleviate road congestion and pollution.

Bombardier Transportation - one of the first private companies to build complete rail vehicles in India - won the contract worth €427m to supply MOVIA cars to the busy Metro network.

The Metro cars are expected to transport over four million passengers each day which is hoped will ease heavy traffic congestion and pollution caused by the one million cars that commute into New Delhi everyday.

The Movia Metro vehicles are configured in four car sets with capacity for 1480 passengers. The sets integrate stainless steel car bodies and a propulsion and control system featuring IP (Internet Protocol) technology.

Deliveries of the trains are scheduled to begin in the last quarter of 2008 with completion in 2010 to provide more public transport during the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in New Delhi in October 2010.
