UK railways could be transformed by longer trains that can run closer together using biofuels and hydrogen power according to The Observer.
The newspaper reports on new government proposals which could end planned delays and overcrowding. Among the plans, the UK is expected to get a new fleet of intercity high-speed trains similar to the Velaro train recently unveiled in Spain.
Plans for a new high-tech railway countrywide also include the introduction of the latest European signalling technology which allows trains to run closer together in addition to conducting new research into trams that run on commuter rail routes and roads.
In response to the claims, UK The Department of Transport declined to comment details, saying instead that no firm plans were yet in place for delivering high-tech trains in the UK.
"A technical strategy will be published later this month, alongside the Department for Transport's white paper on the future of the railways," the department said in an earlier statement.
"The strategy is being produced in close collaboration with the rail industry and brings together many projects already in development. It looks at how technical expertise and excellence can help deliver a modern and sustainable railway over the next 30 years."
