Investigation Begins After UK Tube Derailment

06 July 2007

The UK Government's Rail Accident Investigation branch has confirmed it is investigating yesterday's derailment of a London Underground central line tube train.

The train was derailed in a tunnel between Mile End and Bethnal Green tube stations. Around 700 people and the train behind were left stranded in a tunnel for more than an hour before finally being evacuated down the tracks.

In a statement, UK train operator Metronet say initial reports suggest a bale of material became dislodged, causing the driver to break in order to avoid it. Metronet say it has ordered an immediate audit of all similar storage sites.

The Central line remains shut today with Transport for London (TFL) saying it will take over 24 hours to repair the damage.

The Rail Accident Investigation branch has not confirmed when results of its investigation are due out.
