Chinese Contractors to Begin Work on Ghanaian Rail Line

18 February 2011

Chinese companies CMEC and CMC will begin work in April this year on the $990m Accra-Tema railway extension project, which will run from the central business district (CBD) of Accra to Avenor in Ghana.

The project will be delivered by the Ghana Railway Authority and will be completed by 2012.

Another Nsawam-Kumasi and Ejisu-Paga railway project, worth $6bn, is also set to begin this year with Ejisu-Paga rail passing through Tamale and a new branch line to Yendi.

The government has also invested $100m to construct a modern railway station at the CBD of Accra.

The rail projects will be executed with funds from the Chinese Government, excluding those in Accra.

The new projects will cover an additional 1,200km of rail network and will see new trains that will run at 160km/hr, according to ghanaweb.com.
