UK’s Network Rail Begins Kent Station Upgrade

18 February 2011

Britain's rail operator Network Rail has begun work to create a new glass entrance and ticket office, as part of the proposed upgrade at the Gillingham station in Kent, UK.

The upgrade is being funded jointly through a national stations improvement programme and the Community Infrastructure Fund in partnership with Medway Council.

The work includes extending and refurbishing the station building, waiting rooms, platform roof, over bridge and installation of CCTV cameras.

The project involves installing secondary glazing to the walkway between the ticket hall and lifts, as well as installing new ticket vending machines, ticket gates and creating a new second passenger entrance on Railway Street.

Works are expected to be completed by 2011.

This measure is among one of the various works to transform Medway before the London 2012 Olympics, for which Medway Park, based in Gillingham, will be an athlete’s training base.
