Spanish Firm Wins Ticketing Technology Deal for Indian Metro

15 February 2011

Spain-based IT company Indra, in partnership with Keltron, has won a contract with the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) to implement its access control and ticketing systems in Calcutta Metro in the Indian state of West Bengal.

With the deal worth €6m ($8m) Indra, in cooperation with CRIS for the development of the project, becomes technology partner of the company.

The project includes the design, supply, installation and start up of an integral ticketing system, which will be equipped with Indra's contactless technology.

Metro Railway Kolkata crosses Calcutta from north to south, covering over 25km.

Indra will replace the ageing system with new access control systems and both manual and automated ticketing systems, which will facilitate passenger flow as tickets are validated through radio frequency by means of contactless access control systems.

CRIS is created by the India's Ministry of Railways and is in charge of the technology development of the railway networks of the Indian Railways.
