Alstom Secures Deal to Upgrade Metro Fleet in US

10 February 2011

Alstom Transport has won a $194m contract to execute the complete overhaul of the Port Authority Transit Corporation’s (PATCO) metro fleet in the US, which consists of 120 passenger cars.

The high-speed train line, which runs from Philadelphia to the suburbs of southern New Jersey, carries about 40,000 riders each day.

The modernisation work involves upgrading cars with enhanced technology, including new couplers, car-borne propulsion technology and modern braking, automated train control equipment, and new communication and information displays.

The entire refurbishment and testing process will be carried out in Alstom's rolling stock manufacturing facility in Hornell, New York, and on site testing of the completed cars will also be carried out to ensure safety.

Work on the five-year project will begin in February 2011.

PATCO is owned and operated by Delaware River Port Authority.
