The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) will add a diesel-electric locomotive to its commuter rail fleet, following its inaugural run from Worcester to Boston in Massachusetts, US.
The locomotive's engine employs technology to prevent idling, and can reduce nitrogen oxide levels by 20t per engine annually.
The locomotive will burn about 36,500 fewer gallons while generating more horsepower.
The locomotive is one of two trains purchased from the Utah Transit Authority.
The MBTA board signed a $114m deal with Motive Power in June 2010 for the supply of an additional 20 diesel-electric locomotives.
The locomotives will be brought into service in 2013 to replace the 20 oldest units in the fleet.
