STP Receives Approval for Scottish Station Upgrade

04 February 2011

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) has received approval from Glasgow City Council for its plans to upgrade Hillhead Station in Glasgow, Scotland.

These improvements are part of SPT's £300 million ($483.57m) modernisation programme, which will involve modernisation of three stations in the subway network.

The work will begin later in 2010 and is expected to complete by next year, with work including a redesigned entrance hall to improve access for blind and partially-sighted passengers and the installation of digital signange.

Under the plans submitted to Glasgow City Council, SPT also intends to upgrade Kelvinhall and Ibrox stations ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, using £20m ($32.2m) of reserve funds.

The Scottish Government has not, however, confirmed funding for this programme and is expected to make a decision soon.

The modernisation, if approved, will see new track and tunnel upgrades, station improvements and driverless trains introduced along the route, according to heraldscotland.com.
