Australian State Develops Light Rail Route Proposals

26 January 2011

The Department of Transport in Western Australia is developing a proposal for a route for a light-rail system in Perth.

The possible route for the Perth light rail network could be between Curtin University in the capital Bentley and the University of Western Australia, running through the central business district (CBD) of Perth.

The route could either be along Murray Street and Adelaide Terrace, or Hay Street-St Georges Terrace-Adelaide Terrace, while Thomas Street and the Causeway could be the connecting points west and east of the CBD.

The light rail network was termed the “Knowledge Arc" by Peter Newman of Curtin University Sustainability Policy Institute, who first proposed the light rail route connecting Perth's universities.

The Department of Transport may plan the route along the same route as the Knowledge Arc proposal, and is expected to finalise a final route by April, according to watoday.com.au.
