UK rail freight operator DB Schenker Rail has unveiled plans to invest £3m ($4.8m) to upgrade seven class-60 locomotives to create a fleet of ‘Super 60’ locomotives.
During the first half of 2011, the locomotives will be overhauled in a programme to improve their reliability and extend their life by 15 years.
A further 14 class-60 locomotives are planned to be refurbished, creating a fleet of over 20 ‘Super 60’ locomotives.
DB Schenker noted that the fleet will help meet growing demand from its bulk customers to move more freight by rail.
