Additional North-South Wales Express Rail Service Revealed

20 January 2011

The Welsh Assembly Government has announced that the express rail link between north and south Wales, from Holyhead to Cardiff, is to increase to two return services a day.

Rail operator Arriva Trains Wales is developing plans to lease additional rolling stock to operate extra daily express train services, following £3.5m ($5.6m) from the Welsh Assembly Government.

By leasing the trains for seven years, compared with a payment on an annual basis, the Assembly Government intends to save £350,000 ($560,910).

Arriva Trains Wales has secured timetable slots for the second service and a procurement process to obtain the rolling stock will be developed.

Once the procurement process is complete, details about the start of the service will be made.
