Iraq to Complete Urban Rail Project by 2013

19 January 2011

Iraq's national railway company has revealed that the proposed urban rail project in Baghdad will be completed by 2013.

The project will be carried out along with French company Tharyom, and the proposed service will start from the east of Baghdad, through Ahzamya and Utaifiyya, connecting the central station in Alawi.

The railway will have sub-stations above the ground in residential areas.

Tharyom will oversee the technical work and manage the trains in return for revenues for 20 years, and then handed over to the Baghdad council.

The 25km rail project will ease traffic flow in the region and will commence once the final cost of the project is determined, according to AK News.
