Major improvements will begin next month to rebuild the station steps of Waverley Station's Princes Street entrance in Edinburgh, UK.
Network Rail has appointed Morgan Sindall as the contractor for the project.
The contract includes the installation of three banks of double escalators, a feature entrance to the station, a new level walkway and two lifts for step-free access between the street and Waverley station.
The construction of the steps, two 16-passenger lifts and escalator work is complete, and remaining work will be finalised by July 2012.
The project will improve access for rail passengers, including those with mobility impairment, from Princes Street to the Waverley station, in turn opening up access to the wider rail network.
The Waverley steps redevelopment will cost £7m ($11m) and is funded by Transport Scotland.
The project is progressing in parallel with Network Rail’s wider improvements to Waverley station, including reglazing of the station roof, improvements to platforms and future planned improvements to the Market Street entrance and platforms eight and nine.
