Axion International has secured a contract to install thermoplastic railroad ties in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
The railroad ties will be used for under-road crossings and can withstand freezing temperatures.
Calgary operates about 45km of track for light rail vehicles, and originally ordered 60 Axion ties as a test phase project in early 2009.
The current contract is Axion's second purchase order after the performance of the company’s ties met with approval during a complete freeze-cycle in the Canadian winter.
Upon delivery, the recycled plastic crossties will be integrated into a railroad crossing, where the ties are set under the road level for vehicles to cross the tracks on an at-grade intersection.
Axion said the ties are the first grade-level crossing using 100% recycled thermoplastic ties, as opposed to wood or concrete.
Developed in conjunction with Rutgers University in the US, the ties are inert and contain no toxic materials.
