Beijing Commences Work for Maglev Rail Line

13 January 2011

Beijing has begun construction of a 10.24km section of a new maglev railway line.

The rail line, called S1, is Beijing's first magnetic levitation line.

S1 will use a low and medium-speed magnetic levitation technology and can run at a maximum speed of 105kp/h.

The rail line extends from Shimenying in Mentougou district to Pingguoyuan in Shijingshan district, and is expected to boost the development of the city's less developed areas.

In addition, two subway lines, M6 and M11 at Shimenying and Pingguoyuan, are also in the planning stages.

S1 will be complete by the end of 2013, according to ebeijing.gov.cn.
