The Northeast Illinois Regional Commuter Railroad Corporation (Metra) in Illinois, US, has begun a three-month test of ‘quiet’ railcars on the Rock Island rail line.
The line stretches from Joliet to downtown Chicago, and the test will apply to morning inbound and evening outbound rush-hour trains.
Metra said that if the pilot test of the first and last cars of the Rock Island trains is successful, the programme will be expanded to other lines.
Passengers in quiet cars are asked to avoid using mobile phones or move to the vestibule if they receive calls, as well as silence all electronic devices or use headphones, according to Associated Press.
