Winter Storm Hampers US Rail Services

12 January 2011

Heavy snowfall over the last week has affected rail services in the US states of Georgia, the Carolinas, Virginia, and further north, stretching to Alabama, Tennessee and Texas.

Snow exceeding 10in in some parts of the south-eastern US has delayed coal shipments to the region's power plants, as major railroads were impassable.

Shipping and transportation company Norfolk Southern has announced customers with shipments normally routed through Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee should expect delays of up to 48hr due to a winter storm impacting much of the south-east.

Updated schedule information is available through Norfolk Southern's web-based pipeline management tool Pacesetter.

The Long Island Rail Road, which partially restored its service at the end of December last year, added eight additional trains from Pennsylvania Station to Long Island between 2:10pm and 3:48pm on 7 January.

Transportation company CSX did not issue any delay notices on Monday, but officials at the railroad were reviewing conditions on an hourly basis.

The National Weather Service has issued severe storm warnings until later this week for large areas of eastern and central Virginia, major export routes from mines to ports in Norfolk.
