SBB Cargo and Hupac JV Commences Operation

SBB Cargo International, which was recently established by Swiss Federal Railways' rail freight unit SBB Cargo and European intermodal operator Hupac, has commenced operations.

SBB holds a 75% stake in the joint venture company, while Hupac holds the remaining 25%.

The company will concentrate on intermodal transport and block trains on the European north-south corridor.

The joint venture will cater to the needs of intermodal operators and customers who rely on lean rail haulage that offers Swiss precision instruments on intermodal and conventional block train services.

SBB Cargo International also runs international RAlpin piggyback trains and has its own production companies in Germany and Italy.

The company will be headquartered in Olten, Switzerland, and is planning to relocate to a new headquarters in spring 2011.
