Sumitomo, Nippon Win Taiwan Rail Order

10 January 2011

The Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) has signed a $364m contract with two Japanese firms, Sumitomo Corporation and rail equipment maker Nippon Sharyo, to buy 136 passenger railcars.

The eight-car tilting intercity EMUs can operate at 150km/h and will operate on Taroko Express services between Taipei and Hualien on the TRA's 1,067mm-gauge east coast high-speed tilting train route.

The purchase is intended to boost transportation capacity along the island's eastern coast and meet increasing demand for rail travel from tourists.

Sumitomo will deliver 16 railcars by October 2012, and the rest will be delivered by the end of 2014.
