Beijing Launches Five New Subway Lines

04 January 2011

Beijing has opened five subway lines worth CNY61bn ($9.2bn) in a bid to ease traffic congestion and improve mobility in the city.

The five lines – Fangshan, Changping, the first phase of the Number 15 Line, Yizhuang and Daxing – have a combined length of 108km, bringing the total length of Beijing’s metro rail network to 336km.

The lines extend from Beijing's downtown area to the city's suburban areas, expanding the city’s total subway lines to 14, carrying just over five million passengers a day.

The city aims to have 19 total subway lines with a 561km subway network by 2015 and 1,000km of subway by 2020, according to Xinhua.
