MHI Secures Macau Light Rail Deal

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has secured a MOP4.69bn ($585m) contract to supply rail systems and rolling stock for the first phase of a light rail system in Macau, China.

The 21km first phase will include 21 stations, with ten in Macau and 11 on the islands of Taipa and Coloane, and will initially link the city's eastern coastal areas.

Construction work on the light rail transit system will begin in 2011 and the railway will be complete by early 2015.

Other teams which competed for the deal include Bombardier and the China Road and Bridge Corporation consortium, which submitted a bid of MOP4.57bn ($559.9m), while a Siemens and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation team made a bid of MOP6.28bn ($769.4m), according to Bloomberg.
