Floods Disrupt Rail Services in Australian State

04 January 2011

Rail services across the state of Queensland in Australia have been severely affected following flooding, which began on 24 December.

Rail networks linking mines to the ports have been washed away, halting coal trains and production.

The state's biggest rail system, Goonyella, in Central Queensland, was reopened by QR National following its temporary closure caused by the derailment of a Pacific National train on 24 December at Yukan, west of Mackay.

The completion of the recovery effort will allow rail services to resume on the system, which links mines in the central Bowen Basin with the Dalrymple Bay and Hay Point coal terminals near Mackay.

The Newlands system, which is at the northern end of the Bowen Basin and feeds into Abbot Point Coal terminal at Bowen, remains open.

QR National revealed it could take several days for the trains to operate again on one of Queensland's two biggest rail systems, transporting coal to the port of Gladstone’s coal terminals.
