Massive Snowfall Disrupts Rail Transport Across Europe

24 December 2010

Several train services have been delayed or cancelled across Europe due to heavy snowfall and ice, leaving many travellers stranded.

The UK, France and Germany were among the worst-hit countries, with forecasts signifying freezing weather all week.

East Coast in the UK said its train services had returned to normal and will operate at a near normal timetable after the services were cancelled because of overhead power line problems between Scotland and London King's Cross.

The disruption also affected other rail services including Virgin, ScotRail, First TransPennine Express, Northern Rail, London Midland and Chiltern.

The Eurostar rail service between the UK and France and Belgium was severely delayed, but the Anglo-French operator ran nine out of ten services between London, Paris and Brussels.

Thalys trains between France and Belgium were also affected as speed restrictions hit rail travel in England and northern France.

German railways have deployed ten additional long-distance express trains on major north-south and east-west routes to meet the passenger demand from 22 December.
