Tehran Receives Funds for Subway Expansion

22 December 2010

Iran has allocated €430m ($566m) to purchase wagons for Tehran’s subway system.

The wagons will double the capacity of the subway by March 2012.

About 15km of tunnels have been built for the subway network in the past two years, and plans are underway to construct 30km of tunnels a year.

Of the IRR4.4tn ($41.76m) allocated for the subway expansion, about IRR1.6tn ($15m) has been spent, while the remaining amount is expected to be paid by March 2011.

In addition, three tunnel-boring machines have been installed and the fourth TBM system will be imported soon, which can dig 20-24km of subway tunnels a year, according to iran-daily.com.
