Indian Railways will install a new device on about 1,100 trains passing through fog-prone regions of the country, following successful trails.
The device, based on global positioning system technology, will be installed on locomotives and provide warning signals to locomotive drivers in an effort to reduce accidents.
Indian Railways allocated INR39.6m ($873,774) to develop the 1.4kg device, which provides advance information to drivers about the position of signals, level crossing gates and other safety measures.
The device is less expensive than existing fog signal technology used during the winter, according to The Times of India.
