Virgin Rail Group will bid for the West Coast rail franchise after the UK Government announced support for longer train franchises.
The current franchise will expire on March 2012.
The next West Coast franchise will run for 14 years from 2012 until the planned opening of the High-Speed 2 line.
Virgin Trains has operated the West Coast passenger train franchise since 1997.
