National Express Unlikely to Join UK Intercity Rail Bidding

08 December 2010

National Express is unlikely to join in any bids to operate intercity rail franchises in the UK.

The UK Government will soon announce a number of intercity rail franchises to be re-let in the next few years, including the West Coast main line from London to Glasgow, according to the Financial Times.

National Express intends to concentrate on improving the operation of its two existing rail services, the c2c commuter line between London and Essex, and its East Anglia service between London and Suffolk and Norfolk.

The rail operator is looking to rebuild its reputation after giving up its contract to run the London to Edinburgh train service, since it could not continue payments to the government due to debts of more than ВЈ1bn ($1.57bn).

The National Express contracts to operate the East Anglia and c2c lines will expire in 2011.
