Ukraine's state-owned railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, has revealed plans to overhaul a further 793km of railway line in 2011 and plans to modernise 358km of track.
The repair and modernisation of the lines is part of a bid to introduce high-speed trains with speeds of up to 160kmp/h.
Ukrzaliznytsia has already overhauled 858km of track and modernised 558km since the beginning of 2010.
The company plans to launch high-speed trains on the Lviv-Kyiv-Kharkiv-Donetsk route in the first phase of the project and later extend it to Dnipropetrovsk.
Ukrzaliznytsia also said that it has developed a new mechanism for differentiating passenger and freight trains, which will enable it to increase its freight transport capacity and introduce high-speed passenger trains on these routes.
The state railway is looking to sign a deal with South Korea-based Hyundai in early December for ten Hyundai high-speed trains, six before 2012 and four by the end of 2012.
Ukrzaliznytsia is holding talks with South Korea's Korean Eximbank for a loan of €304m ($405m) to fund the purchase of the trains.
