US State Light Rail Extension Plans Approved

22 November 2010

The Metropolitan Transit Commission (MTC) in the US has approved a plan for a proposed light rail extension of the LYNX Blue Line in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The proposed 11-mile Blue Line extension will connect directly with the existing Blue Line in Uptown Charlotte, and will serve University City and the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.

The project has been delayed due to a series of studies and funding shortages, but the plan is expected to speed up the project's development because it proposes a cost reduction of $920m to $800m.

The Blue Line extension could receive half of its funding from the federal government, 25% from the state and 25% from local authorities, according to wcnc.com.

Charlotte Area Transit System staff will present a more detailed plan to the MTC for the Blue Line on 15 December.
