US City Breaks Ground on Station Project

22 November 2010

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) in the US has broken ground on the $13.5m Yawkey Commuter rail station reconstruction project in Boston, Massachusetts.

The station will feature full-length accessible station platforms, which will enable the MBTA to more than double its service on the Worcester-Framingham commuter rail line from 17 to 40 stops a day.

The station extension will connect it with shuttle buses serving the Longwood Medical Area, while other transit improvements, bike amenities and a bicycle share station are also part of the project.

The project is a key public transportation component of the $450m Fenway Center development project.

Construction of the solar-powered station will begin this year and will be complete in 2012.
