China's Ministry of Railways is reviewing plans to expand its high-speed network, following a report on the project.
The Chinese Academy of Sciences submitted a report to the nation's State Council suggesting a rethink about the practicality and affordability of the high-speed rail network.
According to the Ministry of Transportation, track construction work on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line in Jiangsu province and Shanghai has been completed, increasing the chance that the line will open by October next year.
The 1,318km railroad track between Beijing and Shanghai is expected to reduce travel times to about four hours from the present ten hours, according to Bloomberg.
China plans to increase its high-speed rail track to 13,000km by the end of 2012 and to 18,000km by 2020 from the current 3,676km.
