The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in the US has received $171m from the Federal Railroad Administration to improve services on its intercity passenger rail service.
About $100m of the grant will go towards the purchase of 40 rail cars and six locomotives for the San Joaquin, Pacific Surfliner and Capitol Corridor routes.
Caltrans said the Pacific Surfliner route received more than $28m for track and signal upgrades, bridge work, curve realignments and other infrastructure enhancements.
Another $38m will fund safety improvements through the installation of positive train control technology, which reduces the risk of train-to-train collisions, over-speed derailments and injuries to railway maintenance workers.
The funding is part of more than $901m awarded to the state to improve services, including $731m for the California High-Speed Rail Authority's projects in the Central Valley and San Francisco.
