A ZAR961m ($138m) signalling modernisation project is being delivered for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) as part of its plan to adopt new railway technologies over the next three to five years.
PRASA said the current railway signalling system is very costly and not suited for safe railway operations as it has contributed to accidents in the recent past.
The first phase of the project will commence in January next year along with the construction of a new centralised train control, the Gauteng Nerve Centre.
The new signalling system and nerve centre will enhance operational capacity and allow higher flexibility, improved safety, reduce train delays and reduce human factors in the operation of trains.
PRASA is currently in negotiations with Siemens South Africa for the introduction of the new signalling system across its other high-volume priority corridors.
