US States Receive Funds for Rail Projects

29 October 2010

The US state of Massachusetts will receive more than $160m in federal funding for the expansion of the New England High Speed and Intercity Rail Network.

The grant also includes $32.5m funding to support the design phase of the Boston South station expansion project.

The grant will fund the environmental permitting and design stage for the station expansion project, which includes constructing seven new tracks, expanding the station’s capacity from 13 to 20 tracks.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation received $120m for Amtrak’s New Haven-Hartford-Springfield Corridor, which includes the restoration of double track on the line to improve travel times.

The state of New Hampshire received a $2.24m planning grant for the capital corridor between Boston and Concord, a 73-mile rail corridor that would connect the two state capitals.

Maine and the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority received a $600,000 planning grant for improvements to the Downeaster service between Boston and Portland, Maine.

Massachusetts and 11 other states from Maine to Virginia and the District of Columbia were also awarded a $10m multi-state planning grant to study the role that intercity and high-speed passenger rail play in improving the transportation network in the North East of the country.
