China rolled out two CRH380 bullet trains on 26 October, travelling at a design speed of 350km/h (220mph) between the eastern Chinese cities of Shanghai and Hangzhou.
The trains will reduce the travel time between the two cities from 90 minutes to 45 minutes, covering 200km (126 miles).
Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng said the completion of the new rail line between Shanghai and Hangzhou will accelerate the pace of integration in the Yangtze River Delta, according to The Associated Press.
In a trial run, the train, equipped with China's CRH380 system, has been recorded travelling at about 420km/h (262mph), which officials say is a world train speed record, though it will usually run at an maximum speed of 350km/h.
China's high-speed rail network now covers over 7,430km, and the country is expected to have more than 110,000km of operational railways by 2012, including 13,000km of high-speed rail.
