Ikon Risk Consulting: Systems Engineering

Abstract

Much has been spoken and written about systems engineering (SE) over the last few years but what does it mean? Is it difficult to implement and what are the benefits of adopting SE? Why should we consider what might seem yet another set of acronyms?

Simply put, SE is a collection of powerful processes to improve project delivery, particularly on large scale, very high capital value projects. Consider SE as a set of tools that can ‘fix’ a given problem, much in the same way as a mechanic might choose a wrench or a spanner to achieve a particular task – it’s no different for SE and the best implementations are often the simplest. With SE the benefits will accrue all around, to suppliers, project stakeholders and the bottom line.
