Thales has been awarded another contract by Ansaldo STS, the company leading the consortium selected to build the Thessaloniki metro system in Greece.
Thales will supply the centralised control and telecommunications systems to be installed on the automated metro line. Worth €10.5million, the contract covers system design, integration, commissioning and full support for a period of three years.
Thessaloniki, Greece's second largest city, is building a fully automated, driverless metro system. The first line, which will cover 10km and include 13 stations, is expected to carry an estimated 18,000 passengers per day. The metro is scheduled to enter service in July 2012.
Thales will supply security and supervision equipment for the metro. This includes all of the different subsystems and the centralised control and supervision system:
'The project developed by the Thessaloniki authorities endorses the advantages of latest-generation light rail systems. Fully automated metros require integrated, proven security solutions,' said Jean-Louis Olié, Managing Director of Thales' transportation systems activities. 'Our extensive experience in secure transport solutions was a deciding factor in winning the contract, as was our ongoing partnership with Ansaldo STS, a partner we have already worked with on several projects, notably in Copenhagen, Dublin and Florence.'
