The most modern rail rolling mill in the world which has been commissioned on January 31, 2006 had a successful start-up in a very short time. Only 7 months after commencement of production already more than 200.000 tons of rail and 20.000 tons of special billets have been produced in Leoben-Donawitz, a higher volume as ever before in the same period of time.
Ultra-long rails with a length of 120 metres accounted for more than 50% of total production, also the share of head-hardened premium rail steel grades (HSH®) exceeded 50%. "Not only the large volume which is even above our own high expectations, but also the demanding product mix shows that our new investment is a full success", says the Speaker of the Managing Board, Hans Pfeiler. "Moreover we have already implemented again 39 rail sections in our very broad product range. This is important for the flexibility of our company as a full scope supplier which is appreciated by our customers." At least one new rail section is added each week to the production programme.
The production is continuously increased in order to cope with the demand for high performance rails made by voestalpine.
Voestalpine Schienen GmbH, an affiliate company of the Railway Systems Division of the listed voestalpine AG, is the leading producer of rails in Europe. Thanks to the use of advanced technologies (including the largest available group of premium rail steel grades), the company's comprehensive system competence (for example as regards life-cycle cost strategies) and its targeted service orientation, voestalpine Schienen has achieved a worldwide reputation as customer benefit leader.
