Train manufacturer Bombardier has developed a new maintenance facility in Dandenong, on the south-east fringes of Melbourne, Victoria, to support a new fleet of VLocity trains. These trains are familiar to Victorian rail travellers, being in common use for journeys between Melbourne and regional towns in Victoria.
The civil design of the maintenance facility, which involved adapting an existing building, has been accomplished by consulting engineering firm Halcrow. Their asset engineering team has also been responsible for regular inspections of construction work to verify the structure was completed in accordance with their design and specification.
At the public opening in October, the Victorian Transport Minister, Martin Pakula, said: "Bombardier's new Centre of Excellence here at Dandenong will ensure that the VLocity fleet is well maintained. We are delivering the required facilities to complete minor repairs up to heavy works such as bogie and engine replacement or overhauls. The opening of this fantastic facility today continues the revival of Victoria's rail manufacturing sector, a sector whose future was under a cloud until just a decade ago."
Halcrow delivered the engineering drawings, details and support on time and on budget.
