Stone Wool Vibration Isolation Mats for Phase Three of the Copenhagen Metro

16 July 2008

RockBallast® 3515 has been installed for the third phase of the Copenhagen Metro at several sections covering about 13,000m² in all. RockBallast 3515 was chosen after studies and investigations of insertion loss and cost-effective installation. The solution was chosen by performance, lifetime and fast installation.

COPENHAGEN METRO – PHASE THREE

The Metro uses driverless trains from the Italian company Ansaldo. Each unit has three cars with wide aisles and sliding doors for ease of access. It has seats for 96 passengers and standing room for 204 more. Each car has six sets of automatic double sliding doors, and call points from which passengers can communicate with the main control centre. The maximum design speed is 80km/h (50mph).

The trains operate 24 hours a day, with intervals as short as 90s at peak times. The third phase of the Copenhagen Metro extends from Lergravsparken to the Copenhagen Airport. It is 4.5km in all with five new stations, and the total cost will be around €200 million. Most of the line is on the ground in the open. On certain sections it runs in an open-air tunnel. It opened in 2007.

SOLUTION ROCKBALLAST STONE WOOL VIBRATION ISOLATION MATS

To reduce the vibration mitigation from the tramway track to the surrounding houses a vibration isolation system was applied. RockBallast 3515 was chosen as the elastic part. RockBallast 3515 consists of stone wool mats covered by a geogrid. The mats have a dual density with the hard layer upwards and the soft layer downwards to provide the proper performance.

INSTALLATION

The installation of RockBallast 3515 took place in the summer of 2005 and was performed by Arkil-Novejfa. The mats are being laid out – protected by a coverage of geogrid – and finally covered by ballast stones.
