Tensar Ballast Reinforcement Reduces Track Maintenance Costs

Tensar International reveals new data proving the ballast reinforcing benefits of its stiff polymer geogrids at RailTex 2007.

The recent research conducted by Nottingham University and Network Rail examined the influence of different grid properties, such as stiffness and aperture size, showing significant reductions in track maintenance costs thanks to the use of Tensar's large aperture geogrids from its SSLA product range.

Full-scale testing at the University's railway testing facility clearly showed that, not only are there marked advantages of geogrid reinforced over unreinforced ballast but also the aperture size of the geogrid has a significant influence. Using large aperture (SSLA) geogrids, the optimum performance in relation to standard sized ballasts can be achieved.

This was then backed up by independent trials on the West Coast Main Line, monitored by the Network Rail High-Speed Track Recording Coach (HSTRC), which demonstrated a maintenance reduction factor of 3.5 times as a result of Tensar geogrid reinforcement.

Tensar's geogrids have Network Rail product approval certification (PA05/02516) and have been used in a number of difficult railway sites over the years.
