Network and Infrastructure Support from Glenair’s Full Range of Bonding and Tooling Products

23 May 2005

The Glenair bonding system is a proven, reliable and cost-effective method of attaching a permanent electrical connection without welding, preparation of the contact surface or impacting. It may be installed in blind holes, on an uneven surface or where a painted or corroded surface is present.

The bond uses a cold expansion system requiring only a lightweight hand hydraulic setting tool to install the connection into a pre-drilled hole.

With extensive testing and approval for use by national railway authorities, leading rail infrastructure companies, rolling stock manufacturers and Ministry of Defence for both marine and land vehicle applications, Glenair are the interconnect solution provider.

Rail Bonding

This technology is used to give a superior permanent electrical connection between the cable lug rail and structure for a quick, safe and consistent method of terminating AC/DC and signal connectors in all conditions.

All operations (drilling, setting, termination) are carried out to the same side of the rail providing a reliable, maintenance free electrical connection with low electrical resistance and high mechanical strength. The controlled process meets the stricter requirements of the rail networks, requiring no pre-heating, cleaning or impact whilst maintaining the quality of the rail.

Earth Bonding

The Glenair Earth Bonding system provides a grounding connection that permits the passage of high currents in case of electrical short circuit. The system is easy to implement and is fully adaptable to all situations, dimensions and materials, allowing for earth bonds to be set into a blind hole using a lightweight, hand hydraulic setting tool. The repeatability of the system makes it the ideal choice for all production needs and on-site bonding requirements. Its high tensile strength also permits use as a mechanical fixing.

Drilling of the Rail

Glenair supply petrol, electric and battery operated rail drilling machines for quick and accurate holes in the rail. These are supported by a full range of drilling accessories:

  • The Reaming Annular Cutter has been designed for the drilling of holes in rails for electrical connections. This includes two steps: one part drilling and one part reaming, which guarantees the surface finish, geometry, dimension of the hole and integrity of the rail
  • The Glenair chamfering tool creates a chamfer of around 0,5mm on both sides of the drilled hole, removing burs and sharp corners to avoid the possibility of rail defects

Side Leads

Glenair are Network Rail approved for the manufacture of high current side leads. These are available in either aluminium or copper and to customers' individual requirements.

Hydraulic Crimping and Cable Cutting Tools

Glenair’s comprehensive range of crimping and cable-cutting tools includes hand hydraulic, battery and mains operated tools crimping from 6mm² to 1,000mm² copper and aluminium connectors.

Connector Crimping

Connector crimping tools from Glenair meet all crimping requirements of the rail industry; we supply tools that are compatible with connectors from numerous manufacturers. Crimping capabilities range from cables of cross sectional area 0.3mm² for stamped, turned, machined and forged terminations for signalling connections to high current third rail track feeder terminations and bi metallic fittings.

Tool Repair and Gauging

Glenair offer a comprehensive range of services to maintain and prolong the life of all our hand and hydraulic tools. There is 100% control on tools during manufacture and all our tooling products are validated, trialed and approved after being tested in field.

Specialised tools and gauges and full-time trained personnel at our Authorised Repair Facility based in Mansfield, UK, ensure full serviceability on all Glenair tooling products.
